Jaisalmer

The Hill Fort of Jaisal or Jaisalmer city lies in the Thar Desert surrounded by yellowish sandstone and beautifully sculpted Jain temples. This Golden City was named after Rajput king Maharawal Jaisal Singh and is famous for camel safaris, havelis and Kalbelia dances. You won't regret adding this location to your custom tour in India.

History

Jaisalmer was founded way back in 1156 by Rawal Jaisal and was a popular halting point for camel caravans that travelled along the trade route. It wasn't an easy target for foreign rulers due to its strategic desert location. During the 13th century, the city went through a siege which was instigated by the Turk-Afghan ruler Ala-ud-din Khilji and continued for the next nine years.

Jaisalmer continued to grow right through the 17th century which was considered as its Golden Age. Under the British Raj, it was ruled by the Bhati clan of Rajputs but soon its glory faded as Mumbai became a focal point for trade. A visit to Jaisalmer during your India tour will introduce you to a history as rich as and vibrant as the country itself.

While at Jaisalmer you can try some capers and desert beans locally called ker sangri. If your stomach isn't very spice-friendly, then you can experiment with some bhanon aloo which is a gravy dish of potatoes with a pudina pasta, or try the kadi pakorao which is dumplings soaked in a yogurt base.

Jaisalmer being one of the favourite destination of international travelers also has some great Italian and European cuisine restaurants like Ristorante Italiano OM and if you fancy a home cooked meal you can also head to Vyas Meal Service, where an old grand ma will prepare fresh home cooked meals right in front of you.
